Using a straw to pull liquid up?

Hi, P3 Hum pupils, do this simple experiment and answer the following questions:

1. When you drink liquid from a cup using a straw, are you really pulling the liquid up?
2. Explain why the liquid can travel up the straw and reach your mouth. (hint: related to air and pressure)

  1. I think we are pulling the liquid up because the water is the liquid!
2)Our mouth has air,the air is like a vaccum,it helps us suck up the liquid.

  2. 1)No.
2)We are sucking up the empty space in the straw which is actually filled with air and when the air in the straw is sucked up and enters our mouth, the surrounding air forces the water into the space that was previously occupied by air in the straw until the water eventually enters our mouth!!

  8. no 2)It's not actually pushed up. When you suck on the straw you create a vacuum and the liquid rises to fill the vacuum.
