Math Quiz (6)

A magic square has all lines going across, down and diagonally adding to the same number.
What is the missing value?

Answer to Math Quiz (5)

Question:

Jamie, Peter, Karen and Ben had a race.
Their finishing order was 1, 2, 3, 4 with no ties.
Ben was faster than Karen, but was not 1st or 3rd.
Jamie was just one place in front of Karen.
Who was first?

Solution:
Ben was faster than Karen, but was not 1st or 3rd, so Ben must be 2nd. (Ben cannot be 4th as well since he beat Karen and 4th is last position; that would be Karen.)
Jamie was just one place in front of Karen, so Jamie is 3rd and Karen is 4th.
So Peter is first!

Answer to Math Quiz (4)

Question:
Find the unknown (?). Provide your method in getting the answer.

Solution:
Take 8 + 9 (from the 1st thirds of the 2 circles) = 17 (number shown in the 1st third of the other circle)
3 + 5= 8 (Follow the same steps as the one above)
? + 14 = 40
Answer: 26
Congratulations to those of you who got it right!
Those of you who failed to do so, don't give up, please keep trying! You CAN do it! :-)

The Poor Swimmer

Hi P3 Humility, do you remember the composition you wrote on water safety?

Here's a good composition written by one of your classmates.

"Stop it! I'm all wet already!" screamed Christine as the boys ganged up against her, splashin her with sea water. Sunlight glinted off the waves, as shouts of merriment punctuated the air at East Coast Park beach. Jon, Tom, Christine and Sam were at East Coast Park beach as it had been ages since the four of them had been there. The weather was perfect for a Sunday afternoon outing at the beach.

Exhausted with splashing each other, they soon settled down to a less strenuous activity: building sandcastles. However, Jon was still all hyped up on adrenalin and initiated a game of beach soccer. The rest ignored him, hoping he would soon get tired and join them. Jon excitedly dribbled the ball on his own, pretending to be David Beckham. Too immersed in his fantasy, Jon accidentally kicked the ball too hard and sent it flying into the sea. He groaned as the ball was not his, but his brother's.

Not wanting to face his brother's wrath, Jon waded out to sea to retrieve the ball. The waves grew choppy as he went further out. By this time, he was tired and struggling to keep his head above the water. He began to shout for help.

The trio heard Jon's cries and turned to look for him. Sam saw him drowning and shot off like a bullet towards the water. Sam was the school's best swimmer and was beside Jon within a minute. He supported Jon by the neck and swam back towards the shore.

When they reached shore, Jon vomited out the disgusting sea water that he had drunk. Jon thanked Sam gratefully for rescuing him. He realised it was stupid of him to risk his life to retrieve a ball.

Q1) What do you think makes this a good composition?

Q2) What do you like / do not like about this composition?

3 Humility Song - Created by Mr Samuel Chong

3 Hum Song (tune of the Winx Song)

Close your eyes
And open your heart.
Believe in yourself,
That's how it starts.
Dreams will come true just wait and see,
'Coz the magic's in you and the magic's in me!

Chorus:
We are 3 Hum!
We are 3 Hum!
Come join the club!
We are 3 Hum!
We are 3 Hum!
We are 3 Hum!
Come join the club!
We are 3 Hum!

Difficult fractions,
Hard-to-do problems
With guts and more
We can do it all,
Practice shapes and hard work moulds,
We’ve got the fire burning deep inside,

We've got the marks,
And we've got the grades.
Look all you want,
Just don't take my praise!

Water Safety - Composition

Hi 3 Humility,

Do you remember the composition we did on water safety? I have picked out a good story. It was written by one of your classmates. What do you think?

Tim said, "Hooray! Class is over." He walked out of school. When he reached home, Tim took out his new ball. The ball was bright red with black spots. He ran out to play. As he was dribbling his ball along a path, his ball bounced on a rock and fell into a canal.

Tim became desperate. He thought for awhile and said," I will jump into the canal!" He jumped into the canal. Tim felt frightened and nervous as he splashed in the deep green water.

Tim desperately tried to swim towards his ball. The current was strong and Tim was a poor swimmer. He wished someone would jump into the water and save him. Fortunately, a man was walking along the canal and heard Tim's cries for help. The man wore a red shirt, a pair of yellow pants and a blue hat. The man hurriedly dived into the canal to save Tim. He swiftly swam to Tim and lifted him out of the water.

Tim thanked the man a hundred times. The man said, "Never jump into deep water if you are a poor swimmer." Tim nodded his head and left.

I have 3 questions for you to think about.
(1) pick out 2 good words / phrases
(2) pick out a good idea / portion from the above composition that you think can improve the composition you wrote
(3) change the ending of this composition (last paragraph)

Answer to Math Quiz (3)

Hi all,
Here is the answer. Congratulations again to those of you who manage to get the answer right. I particularly like Thinzar's explanation.

What is the answer in the blank?

Ans: RI
Explanation: Look at the first row of letters - RA, SC and TE. The 2nd letter of each pair of letters are A, C and E. The pattern is such that it skips by a letter. A to C skips letter B.
C to E skips letter D.
If you look at the 2nd row of letters - QC, RE and SG, the 2nd letter of each pair of letters are C, E and G. Again, it skips a letter to get to the next letter. C to E skips letter D.
E to G skips letter F.
This pattern applies to the last row of letters, PE, QG and ?. From E to G, it skips letter F. So, G to ? will skip letter H. As such, the 2nd letter should I.
If you look at the diagonal row of letters, RA, RE and ?, the first letter R is underlined. This is again a pattern and hence, the first letter of ? should be R.
That makes the answer RI.

Math Quiz (3)

What is the answer in the blank?

Answer to Math Quiz (2)

Hi 3 Humility

The answer is finally here! Are you excited?

Question:
If there are FIVE people in a room and each shakes hand exactly once with everyone else in the room, how many handshakes will there be?

Okay, I have attached a picture here to help you understand it better. The coloured dots represent people. Each line between the dots represents a handshake. The numbers represent the number of handshakes. Remember the handshake is not supposed to be repeated.

Answer:
10 handshakes

It is best to act it out with 4 other people. It really helps in your understanding.

Math Quiz (2)

If there are FIVE people in a room and each shakes hand exactly once with everyone else in the room, how many handshakes will there be?
(Hint: Act it out or draw a diagram to help you.)

Answer to Math Quiz (1)

What is the missing number?
Wow, I am glad most of you get the right answer. The answer is 18.
How to get it:
Multiply numbers outside the + sign. That means, take 6 x 5. It gives you 30 which can be found between the numbers in the diagram. Try 8 multiplied by 3. It gives you 24. Hence, to get the answer, you need to multiply 6 and 3.

Conjunctions

Hi Girls,

How has your holiday been so far?

Do you still remember what we have learnt in class about conjunctions?
Take a minute to list down all the conjunctions we have learnt so far. (and, so, but ……) Can you think of more?

Let us do a little revision before we proceed to the quiz.
There are three factsheets. Go through each of the factsheet.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/grammar/interestsentences/compoundsentences/factsheet.shtml

Conjunctions join two short and simple sentences to make a compound sentence.

Try these games.
There are three parts to the game:
- Is this a compound sentence?
- Make compound sentences
- Putting texts into compound sentences
